Workshop Manager - Bedford
We are currently looking for a Workshop Manager to operate from our Bedford Depot. The Workshop Manager will report to the Depot Manager and be responsible for managing and leading both Fitters and Yard People to carry out planned maintenance activities to ensure our plant operates safely and reliably. The maintenance will mainly include PDI’s, LOLER inspections, Servicing and general damage repairs. The Workshop & Yard Manager is responsible for driving productivity, ready for rent standards and technical excellence in the workshop including 5S auditing across two workshops.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Leading & manage the Workshop and all fleet maintenance activity. planning, assigning and reviewing the work of the workshop fitters & yard staff
- Raising and allocate workshop jobs/workload to all fitters making best use of resource.
- Allocating yard tasks (derived from 5S) and brief DFD machine wash requirements
- Ensuring the machinery is fit for hire, turning around machines quickly and with accuracy.
- Coaching & mentoring the fitter team ensuring the correct level of competence, efficiency, pace and behaviour.
- Effectively manage stock levels in the workshop store to ensure readiness at PDI.
- Promoting Health and Safety throughout the depot – in line with the 5S philosophy.
- Reacting promptly and with effectiveness to the due for delivery report by briefing and proactively planning to avoid any delay in machine delivery.
- Ensuring contract and customer specifications are adhered to including thorough examination/PDI/Service.
- Liaising with the Depot Manager and National Operations Manager to ensure maximum availability of fleet.
- Willingly perform ad hoc duties as required.
- Deputise for the Depot Manager in his absence.
Ideally, you will possess:
- Recognised industry qualification (City & Guilds/NVQ 2/3 in Plant Maintenance)
- Able to demonstrate a full and varied knowledge of plant machinery
- Proven experience on plant vehicle repairs with an analytical approach to problem solving
- Proven customer focus & service awareness
- Strong communication (written and verbal)

- Basic computer skills
- Able to delegate and influence staff with robustness
- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent numeracy and literacy skills
- In possession of a full, valid driving licence, with no more than 3 points
